Emily was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of her burial was signed by the clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. John signed it: and John’s name was good upon ’Change, for anything he chose to put his hand to. Emily was as dead as a door-nail. Emily died in a car accident and John could not handle the loss of his young wife. He visited her grave every day and buried his face in tears, also in the evening before All Saints, where the dead are honored. He put fresh flowers on the wife's grave. But suddenly something strange happened: Emily rose from the cool grave and kissed his lips softly, drying the tears of his grief.?
